Programmes and projects

The ILO operates a wide range of programmes and projects in Asia Pacific focusing on relief and development challenges. The overall purpose of this technical cooperation is to support implementation of the Decent Work agenda in each country.

  1. ILO/ACTRAV Norway Project: Trade Unions for Social Justice in Nepal

    1 January 2012 - 31 December 2015

    ILO/ACTRAV, with support from Norway, has been carrying-out this project in Nepal since early 2007. The ultimate goal of the project is to enhance the capacity of the trade unions in Nepal for effective and active involvement and participation in social dialogue at different levels. The project has been supporting the major trade unions to enhance their capacities in dealing with youth employment, freedom of association and collective bargaining and eliminating child labour.

  2. Occupational Safety and Health in Hazardous Work in Viet Nam

    1 January 2012 - 31 December 2014

    This project aims to address occupational safety and health (OSH) in hazardous industries in Viet Nam, strengthen national OSH systems in line with the on-going national OSH programmes, and improve OSH standards at workplace level.

  3. Making Decent Work a Reality for Domestic Workers - Philippines

    1 January 2012 - 31 December 2013

    The International Labour Organization (ILO) launched efforts to uphold the rights of domestic workers including the Philippines. The “Making Decent Work a Reality for Domestic Workers” (DOMWORK) Project blazed the trail leading the establishment of a network of ILO’s partners including non-government organizations, civil society organizations, the academe, the informal economy workers group and faith-based organizations.

  4. Building Capacities on Indigenous and Tribal Peoples’ Issues in Bangladesh: Rights and Good Practices

    1 January 2012 - 31 December 2015

    Promotes the rights of indigenous peoples in Bangladesh through piloting a targeted capacity building and advocacy initiative based primarily on the principles of ILO Conventions (No.107, No.169, and No.111) and other international instruments relevant to Indigenous and Tribal Peoples.The ILO Office in Dhaka is implementing the project while NORMES (PRO 169) department has the technical backstopping responsibility.

  5. Better Work Bangladesh - Design and Beyond

    1 November 2011 - 30 June 2013

    Better Work is a partnership programme between the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) that aims to improve compliance with labour standards and promote competitiveness in global supply chains, in particular in labour intensive industries.

  6. Promoting Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work in Bangladesh (FPRW)

    1 October 2011 - 30 June 2015

    The project aims to address specific challenges faced by workers’ and employers’ organizations by building local capacity in relation to freedom of association and collective bargaining. The project supports the Government of Bangladesh with legislative and policy initiatives to support full-fledged compliance with international labour standards.

  7. Promoting Fundamental Rights and Strengthening Labour Market Governance in the Maldives

    1 September 2011 - 30 June 2015

    The Project contributes to improving labour-relations in the Maldives.

  8. Enhancing Rural Access (ERA) Project (Timor-Leste)

    1 September 2011 - 21 February 2016

    To substantially improve the quality of life of its people and to reduce the incidence of poverty, the Government has therefore prioritized the accelerated development and improvement of a well-connected and coherent road network and other key infrastructure, which is seen as being fundamental to the country’s development.

  9. Promoting Decent Work through Integrating Employment in Industrial Policies and Sectoral Strategies in Southeast Asia

    1 July 2011 - 30 June 2012

    As countries across the Asia and the Pacific region recover from the global economic crisis, many countries are looking to strengthen the foundations for a more inclusive and sustainable future through the promotion of job-rich growth. In Indonesia, the Government is taking forward a pro-growth, pro-poor, pro-job and pro-environment development strategy.

  10. ILO/Japan Fund for Building Social Safety Nets in Asia and the Pacific (SSN Fund)

    15 June 2011 - 31 December 2024

    The SSN Fund aims to broaden the use of social safety nets through a wide range of projects to extend existing social security systems, promote occupational safety and health (OSH), develop human resources, strengthen labour inspection, eliminate forced labour and foster entrepreneurship. The Fund also responds to natural disasters by implementing crisis response activities in the affected areas to support disaster recovery.

  11. Sustaining Competitive and Responsible Enterprises (SCORE)

    1 June 2011 - 31 December 2021

    SCORE is a practical training and workplace improvement programme to increase the productivity of small and medium-sized enterprises while promoting respect for workers’ rights.

  12. Programme on HIV and AIDS

    1 June 2011 - 31 December 2012

    People with HIV often suffer from stigma and discrimination. At the workplace, people with HIV often are denied basic employment rights, receive little or no social protection including health insurance coverage for HIV-related illnesses, and discriminated against by their employers and co-employees. HIV incidence rate in the Philippines is pegged at less than 1 per cent.

  13. Reducing HIV Vulnerabilities of Men Who Have Sex with Men in Saunas (Bangkok, Thailand)

    1 April 2011 - 30 June 2012

    The main objective of the project was to contribute to the reduction of new HIV infections and risk behaviours among men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM) in Thailand by addressing HIV and AIDS prevention through workplace programmes in Bangkok sauna enterprises.

  14. Local Empowerment through Economic Development Projects in Sri Lanka

    1 February 2011 - 31 March 2012

    The ILO believes that sustainable development can only be achieved by addressing issues of full and fair employment. To ensure recovery, economic growth, social justice and lasting peace in post-conflict Sri Lanka, development must be complemented by job creation and growth.

  15. Promoting Decent Work Across Borders: A Project for Migrant Health Professionals and Skilled Workers

    The International Labour Organization (ILO), with funding support from the European Union (EU), implements a programme called Promoting Decent Work Across Borders: A Project for Migrant Health Professionals and Skilled Workers.

  16. Sustaining Competitive and Responsible Enterprises (SCORE) Project - Phase 2

    3 January 2011 - 31 October 2017

    The Sustaining Competitive and Responsible Enterprises (SCORE) programme is a global technical assistance programme developed by the ILO to support small and medium sized enterprises’ (SMEs) development and create decent work. The SCORE programme aims to solve problems faced by SMEs through a short-term training for managers and employees, along with on-site expert consultations and guidance.

  17. Promoting equality in employment for the Dalit Community in India

    With a view to strengthening follow-up to the comments of the ILO supervisory bodies, US$200,000 has been allocated from the Special Programme Account by the Governing Body for NORMES and DECLARATION to work together in 2011 to strengthen national capacities to apply international labour standards on non-discrimination in employment and occupation and on freedom of association and collective bargaining. Within this framework, $100,000 has been allocated for work in India.

  18. Combating the Worst Forms of Child Labour in Shrimp and Seafood Processing Areas in Thailand

    31 December 2010 - 31 March 2016

    The project aims to create an industry that is free of child labour and offers decent working conditions and opportunities.

  19. Promoting and Building Unemployment Insurance and Employment Services in ASEAN

    31 December 2010 - 31 December 2013

    The project seeks to promote, build and strengthen social security schemes and employment services for un- and underemployed workers in the ASEAN countries. The project aims at disseminating policy-oriented research findings and documented experiences; providing technical assistance to one pilot country, Viet Nam; and building an unemployment insurance (UI) expertise network among ASEAN countries by enhancing policy makers’ capacity.

  20. Project on “Promoting decent work through good governance, protection and empowerment of migrant workers: Ensuring the effective implementation of the Sri Lanka National Labour Migration Policy” Phase I

    1 December 2010 - 31 March 2013

    The Project supports the Government and stakeholders to jointly implement the commitments in the Sri Lanka National Labour Migration Policy of 2008 to enhance the governance of the labour migration process and to empower and protect migrant workers and their family members.
