    Realizing a fair migration between Asia and the Arab States

    The largest migrant flows from South Asia and part of South-East Asia are to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, who currently rely on foreign labour to fill in almost 90 per cent of private sector jobs, often in construction, service and domestic work. In total there are over 22 million migrant workers in the GCC countries. These numbers may likely rise due in part to massive infrastructure projects, such as those associated with the Qatar World Cup 2022 and the UAE World Expo 2020.

    South to South agency cooperation

    A delegation from the Papua New Guinea Department of Labour and Industrial Relations (DLIR) visited the Fiji Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations (MEPIR) office in Lautoka, Fiji, to discuss and learn more about the processes and good practices to set up and operationalizing a Child Labour Unit.

    Providing better working and living conditions for migrant fishers in the ASEAN region

    27 April 2015, Jakarta, Indonesia

    The issue of work in fishing is important for countries in Asia, including Southeast Asia. Over 87 per cent of the world’s fishers and 73 per cent of the global fleet of fishing vessels come from Asia (FAO, 2012). Cambodian and Myanmar migrant workers, for example, work on Thai vessels fishing in Malaysian and Indonesian waters; while beyond the ASEAN region, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Filipino fishermen also work on Korean and Taiwanese vessels.

    Winners announced for Viet Nam's 2nd Media Award on Labour and Employment

    24 April 2015,

    Winners included journalists of Can Tho, Sai Gon Giai Phong, Tuoi Tre and Dan Tri newspapers. The second national labour media award with total prizes worth VND100 million was co-organized by the Academy of Journalism and Communication, the Central Committee for Propaganda and Education and the International Labour Organization.
