  1. ILO launches Saphan Siang campaign to improve understanding and change public attitudes towards migrant workers

    BANGKOK (ILO News) The ILO, IOM, UNESCAP and World Vision launched the Saphan Siang campaign with the aim of improving understanding between Thais and migrant workers working in Thailand. The campaign provides a public forum to discuss issues on the protection of the rights of migrant workers which will increase knowledge and understanding of migrant workers.

  2. Breakthrough in reforming labour legislation in Vanuatu

    Tripartite constituents in the Pacific Island nation of Vanuatu have achieved a breakthrough in consultations to draft an Employment Relations Bill. The new Bill will replace the existing Employment Act, the Trade Disputes Act and the Trade Unions Act.

  3. Judicial Colloquium on Human Trafficking & Forced Labour

    A Judicial Colloquium on Human Trafficking & Forced Labour was held from 7-9th August with the participation of 65 Judges. Human Trafficking is gaining increased global attention as a transnational organized crime. The profits generated from trafficking in human beings are significantly high, thereby making it one of the most lucrative criminal industries in the world.

  4. Vavuniya North Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society to support more than 2,000 paddy farmers

    The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society (MPCS) of Vavuniya North have joined forces to re-tool a major rice milling operation damaged during the years of Sri Lanka’s civil conflict.

  5. Indonesia to examine its progress on the social protection floor

    In Indonesia, informal economy workers and employees without contracts are largely uncovered by social security benefits. It is estimated that 54 per cent of the total population does not have access to social health protection (most of the excluded are workers in the informal economy and their families) and 83 per cent of workers do not have access to other social security benefits (old age, death, work injury).

  7. New ILO survey reveals limited public support for migrant workers' rights in Asia; ILO campaign aims to improve understanding between host populations and migrant workers

    BANGKOK (ILO News) There is limited support for the rights of migrant workers among the public according to a new multi-country study released by the ILO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific. In general the report reveals higher levels of public support for migrant workers, in terms of their rights and their contribution, in Singapore and South Korea than in Malaysia and Thailand.

  8. Protecting Indonesian migrant workers against gender based violence and HIV and AIDS vulnerabilities

    Indonesian women migrant workers, a majority of whom work as domestic workers, are particularly vulnerable to gender based violence and to HIV and AIDS throughout the entire course of the migratory cycle. Gender based violence stands out as one of the main violations faced by women migrant workers and poses a direct risk to them of HIV infection.

    Representatives of major companies in the electronic industry, trade unions, employers’ organizations and the Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration discussed the importance of social dialogue between employers and workers to improve the productivity and efficiency of the electronics industry in Indonesia in Bogor, West Java, from 21 – 23 June.

  11. Indonesia to examine its progress towards achieving decent work

    The promotion of decent work is defined as “productive work in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity”. The 2008 ILO Declaration on Social Justice and a Fair Globalization reaffirmed the commitment of Member States to promote decent work based on the four equally important strategic objectives: (1) promoting employment; (2) developing and enhancing measures of social protection; (3) promoting social dialogue and tripartism; and (4) respecting, promoting and realizing the fundamental principles and rights at work.

  12. Tackling child labour through Public-Private-Local Community Partnership

    Child labour remains a significant problem in Indonesia. The 2010 National Child Labour Survey showed that 4 million children are working and 1.7 million of them are child labourers, with work that affect negatively their well being, their safety and their capacity to benefit from normal schooling.

  18. World Day against Child Labour: Warning! Children in hazardous work! End child labour!

    In a new report issued for World Day Against Child Labour, the International Labour Organization (ILO) warns that a staggeringly high number of children are still caught in hazardous work – some 115 million of the world’s 215 million child labourers – and calls for urgent action to halt the practice. The report, “Children in hazardous work: what we know, what we need to do,” cites studies from both industrialized and developing countries indicating that every minute of every day, a child labourer somewhere in the world suffers a work-related accident, illness or psychological trauma.
