    In a new report issued for World Day Against Child Labour, the International Labour Organization (ILO) warns that a staggeringly high number of children are still caught in hazardous work – some 115 million of the world’s 215 million child labourers – and calls for urgent action to halt the practice. The report, “Children in hazardous work: what we know, what we need to do,” cites studies from both industrialized and developing countries indicating that every minute of every day, a child labourer somewhere in the world suffers a work-related accident, illness or psychological trauma.

  3. New project to improve Afghan labour laws and administration, promote decent work

    (LO NEWS – Kabul) A new project to strengthen labour law and administration in Afghanistan will be launched today by the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Martyrs and Disabled (MoLSAMD) and the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations specialised agency dealing with work and work-related issues.

  4. ILO and BP sign a Public Private Partnership agreement in Indonesia

    The International Labour Organization (ILO) and BP have signed a Public Private Partnership (PPP) agreement to promote employability and entrepreneurship among Papuan youth in Bintuni Bay Area, West Papua, an emerging oil and gas cluster in Indonesia. The agreement was signed in Jakarta on 30 May by Mr Nico Kanter, Head of Country, BP Indonesia and Mr Peter van Rooij, Country Director of the ILO in Indonesia.

  6. Indonesia to improve its tourism statistics to create better jobs in tourism industry

    Tourism plays a key role in the economic development of Indonesia. Last year, the contribution of the tourism industry to the GDP was more than 3 per cent and the number of visitors to the country is also continuously growing, around 7 million foreign visitors in 2010 and more than 122 million domestic tourists in 2010.

  7. New measures to protect migrant workers

    BANGKOK (ILO News) - A package of measures aimed at improving recruitment practices and the protection of migrant workers’ rights has been launched by the Ministry of Labour’s Department of Employment (DOE) and the International Labour Organization (ILO). On 25 May 2011, Ms Sutassanee Suebwongpat, Director General of the Department of Employment and Mr Jiyuan Wang, Director of the ILO Country Office for Thailand, Cambodia and Lao PDR will sign a Letter of Understanding to promote cooperation between the two parties from 2011 to 2012.

  13. World Day for Safety and Health at Work: Preventing occupational accidents through OSH risk management

    Occupational safety and health (OSH) issues are not only the concerns of workers but also the employers. Globally, according to ILO data, an estimated 337 million workplace accidents and 2.3 million deaths occur every year. In addition, the data of the State-owned Enterprise for Workers’ Social Insurance (Jamsostek) revealed that around 0.7 per cent of Indonesian workers have experienced occupational accidents that have caused national financial losses of Rp 50 trillion.

  15. Economic growth alone is no guarantee for job-rich and inclusive growth, says new ILO report

    Despite the negative impact of the global financial crisis felt across the region, Indonesia maintained positive economic growth both in 2009 and 2010. The Indonesian Economy is forecasted to grow annually at over 6 per cent in the coming years. This accelerating growth alone is not panacea for various labour market challenges, a new report by the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Office for Indonesia says.

  17. ILO-Bappeda to identify constraints to employment growth in Maluku

    The International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Provincial Development Planning Agency (Bappeda) in Maluku will organize a training workshop on employment diagnostic analysis from 11 – 13 April 2011 at the Swiss-Bel Hotel, Ambon, Maluku. The workshop is aimed to identify the main challenges and opportunities for increasing productive employment in Maluku and to build capacity in employment diagnostic analysis among policymakers, social partners and academia as part of the efforts to boost employment growth in Maluku.
