BANGKOK (ILO News) – A new report on the state of labour markets for young people worldwide will be launched by the ILO. The report, “Global Employment Trends for Youth 2012”, will be released on Tuesday 22 May 2012.

The cash-for-work initiative, funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with support from UN Women and the International Labour Organisation (ILO), is being implemented with the Government of Fiji to focus initially on market vendors in Rakiraki, one of the country’s worst affected districts, located halfway between the capital Suva and the western town of Nadi.

JAKARTA (Joint Press Release): Employing more than 95 per cent of the world’s working population, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the main source of employment in developing countries, including Indonesia. In Indonesia, SMEs have also become a significant support to the sustainable development of the economy and important channel to absorb surplus labour. In fact, more than 60 per cent of the labour force is employed in SMEs.

Manila (ILO News) - Young Filipino leaders raised concerns on youth unemployment and migration, access to information, education and training, protection and promotion of workers’ rights in a recent youth employment forum held in Manila. The forum joined by over a hundred youth, was an opportunity to review the draft National Action Plan for Youth and discus the challenges that face many young people today.

Manila (ILO News) - Over a hundred youth leaders and representatives met with government agency officials, workers and employers group, academe, and civil society organizations in a youth employment forum dubbed, “Kahit Saan, Kahit Kailan: Marangal na Trabaho para sa Kabataan Matatagpuan (Any Time, Any Where: Decent Work for Young Filipinos).” The forum is part of the International Labour Organization’s declaration of March as youth employment month and of a series of nationwide action planning workshops that seeks to address concerns on youth employment and migration in the Philippines.

JAKARTA (ILO News): Although the Government of Indonesia has issued a number of regulations concerning migrant workers and gender mainstreaming, significant challenges still hamper the development of effective policy and regulations for the protection of migrant workers against gender based violence and HIV and AIDS. Indonesian women migrant workers, a majority of whom work as domestic workers, are particularly vulnerable to gender based violence and to HIV and AIDS throughout the entire course of the migratory cycle.

Manila (ILO News) - One hundred days after Sendong, many storm-affected individuals are in search of decent jobs to rebuild their lives and to restore their livelihoods. Regie Loyola, 29, was one of the 624,000 people whose livelihoods had been affected when Tropical Storm Sendong hit many parts of Northern Mindanao last December 2011. “Livelihoods were washed out by the storm,” said Regie, a helper and mechanic assistant. “Many storm-affected people are searching for jobs after the storm to feed their children and to help their families survive. But it is hard for me to look for a job because I did not finish high school.”

JAKARTA (ILO News): A critical element of the current global jobs crisis is the struggle of young people to enter and remain in the labour market. For those who do have a job, the quality of jobs is often an issue. According to ILO estimates, of the total of 200 million people unemployed worldwide, 75 million, or around 40 percent, are young people. In many economies, young people are 2.8 times likely to be unemployed than adults but in Indonesia youth are 4.6 times more likely to be unemployed than their adult counterparts.

KUPANG (ILO News): Despite of the importance of the role of domestic workers, domestic work is still not recognized as work. Since their work is done in private households, which are not considered work places in many countries, their employment relationship is not addressed in national labour laws or other legislation, denying them recognition as workers entitled to labour protection.
