The International Labour Organization and the Bangsamoro Development Agency today signed an agreement that will contribute to peace building efforts through local economic development, decent work and sustainable livelihoods in Mindanao.

The ILO estimates that there are 2.6 million domestic workers in Indonesia, of which 26 per cent are children under the age of 18 years old. The great majority of domestic workers are female, around 90 per cent, with low educational levels mainly coming from poor families in rural communities.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) in Indonesia, in collaboration with Child Protection Board (LPA) of South Sulawesi, will join with governments, employers’ organizations, NGOs, and other key constituents, including child labourers, in organizing a provincial action against child domestic workers on Wednesday, 12 June 2013, from 09.00am – 11.00am, at Sudirman Street of Makassar, South Sulawesi. The street is one of the main streets of Makassar, surrounding the official residence of the Governor of South Sulawesi.

This year’s annual World Day against Child Labour (12 June) will put the spotlight on the plight of child labourers in domestic work. On this occasion, the ILO will release a new report: “Ending child labour in domestic work: Protecting young workers in domestic work from abuse and exploitation”.

Sharing models and innovative ideas for implementing a national social protection strategy in Cambodia and developing nationally defined social protection floors in ASEAN were the focus of a workshop held in Siem Reap, Cambodia, from 29 to 31 May 2013. The technical workshop on “Integrating Social Policies and the Delivery of Social Protection Floors (SPF)” was co-organized by the Royal Government of Cambodia and the ILO.

The Norwegian Minister for International Development Mr Heikki Eidsvoll Holmås and the ILO Country Office for Bangladesh Director Mr Srinivas Reddy will sign an agreement on 3 June. The Norwegian Government will provide NOK14.5 million (US$2.5 million) to support workers' rights and labour relations in export industries in Bangladesh.

All provincial labour departments agreed on action plans to revise labour legislations regarding child and bonded labour and subsequent actions. Moreover, the Ministry of Human Resource Development and Provincial Labour Departments have also agreed in action plans to improve reporting on ILO Conventions.
