  1. ILO: Better Work Indonesia helps to stamp out fire risks in partner factories

    When a fire tore through a footwear factory in Jakarta in 2010, four people died. They became trapped between the flames and a locked emergency exit. In Bangladesh, locked emergency exits were partly to blame for 112 fatalities during a massive garment factory fire in 2012.

  4. Strengthening business resilience of Indonesian small and medium enterprises in the face of disaster

    Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are vulnerable to various types and forms of threats, dangers or crisis. The recent flood emergency in Jakarta in early 2013, for example, had severely hurt businesses, particularly SMEs. Floods had destroyed SMEs’ business assets and disrupted their business continuity, which in turn would put them at risk of losing their businesses and falling into poverty.

  6. Provinces review Labour Laws with ILO Conventions

    More amendments are needed to harmonize the provincial Labour Legislations in line with Pakistan’s ratified ILO conventions. This was agreed by the representatives from the four provincial departments of labour, Gilgit-Baltistan, Employers Federation of Pakistan (EFP) and Pakistan Workers Federation (PWF) who jointly reviewed the labour laws in a four days’ workshop, 26-29 March 2013, held in Islamabad.

    The United Nations firmly condemns the on-going violence in the country, particularly the recent tragic events in Quetta, Karachi and this past weekend in Lahore, targeting especially religious and ethnic minorities in Pakistan.

    A worker is offered better hours or more money in return for sexual favours; a manager pinches the bottom of a worker; a worker spreads malicious rumours about a fellow co-worker. These are all forms of harassment, and are common in one form or another in many Indonesian garment factories.

  14. Lao PDR Luanches First National Skills Standards.

    The first national skills standards for the Lao PDR were launched in Vientiane today, focusing on the construction and automotive industries. The standards were developed by the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare with the support of the Partnership Programme of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Republic of Korea.

  15. Lao PDR Luanches First Labour Force and Child Labour Surveys.

    18 January 2013, Vientiane, Lao PDR

    The first surveys of the labour force and child labour in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) were launched in Vientiane today by the Government of Lao PDR with the support of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

  16. Maldives ratifies the eight ILO fundamental Conventions

    16 January 2013,

    The Maldives has ratified the eight ILO fundamental Conventions on 4 January 2013, dealing with four categories of fundamental principles and rights at work: freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining; the elimination of all forms of forced or compulsory labour; the effective abolition of child labour; and the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.

  17. Promoting women’s access to decent work and equality in employment in indonesia
