  1. ILO Director-General arrives in the Philippines, extends sympathies to typhoon survivors

    16 December 2012, Manila, Philippines

    The Director-General of the International Labour Organization, Mr Guy Ryder, arrives today in Manila for a two-day visit and extends his sympathies to those who lost their loved-ones a year ago in Washi (Sendong) and more recently by Typhoon Bopha (Pablo).

  2. ILO-AJI Jakarta to award journalists on child labour and education

    15 December 2012, Jakarta, Indonesia

    The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) Jakarta will conduct a media award ceremony on child labour and education on the 15th December in Jakarta. The winners from five categories—print, online, radio, TV and photo journalist—will be officially announced during the ceremony.

  3. ILO Director-General visits the Philippines

    14 December 2012, Manila, Philippines

    The Director-General of the International Labour Organization, Mr Guy Ryder, will visit the Philippines from 16 to 17 December. This will be Mr Ryder’s first visit to the Philippines since he was elected on 1 October 2012.

  4. ILO and Nepal co-host workshop on informal employment

    10 December 2012, Kathmandu, Nepal

    The ILO and the Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE) co-host a national tripartite workshop to discuss ways to address work in the informal economy.

  5. ADB-OECD-ILO team up to examine trade and employment globally

    07 December 2012, Jakarta, Indonesia

    As part of the International Collaborative Initiative on Trade and Employment (ICITE) activities, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and International Labour Organization (ILO) will host a regional conference on Trade and Employment in a Globalized World on Monday – Tuesday, 10 – 11 December 2012, at the Borobudur Hotel, Jakarta.

  6. The 2012 Human Rights Day: The right of children to be free from child labour

    07 December 2012, Jakarta, Indonesia

    To commemorate the 2012 Human Rights Day, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Indonesia, in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and Terre des Hommes will host a film screening and a panel discussion on Child Labour: “Aku, masa Depanmu Jakarta!” on Monday, 10 December 2012, from 15.00 – 18.00 at the Erasmus Huis Jakarta.

  7. Wages in Asia outperform other regions - new ILO report

    07 December 2012, Bangkok, Thailand

    Wages in Asia have outperformed those in most other parts of the world, including the Western economies, according to a new report from the ILO. Between 2000 and 2011 wages in Asia almost doubled. Globally real average monthly wages grew by just under a quarter in the same period, while in the developed word the increase was only around 5 per cent over the entire period.

  8. ILO Director-General to visit Thailand

    07 December 2012, Bangkok, Thailand

    The Director-General of the ILO, Mr Guy Ryder, is to visit Thailand from Thursday 13 December to Sunday 16 December. The trip will be Mr Ryder’s first visit to Asia since he took up the post of Director-General on 1 October 2012.

  9. Promoting universal social protection coverage in Indonesia

    As part of national efforts to implement universal social protection in Indonesia, the International Labour Organization (ILO), in collaboration with the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), has launched the key results of the Social Protection Floor (SPF) assessment.

  10. ILO to publish global wage report 2012/13

    03 December 2012, Bangkok, Thailand

    A new report on trends in wages worldwide will be released by the ILO. The Global Wage Report analyses average real wages across the world, giving a unique picture of wage trends and relative purchasing power across the world and by region. The 2012/13 edition also looks at the consequences of the wage trends, the effect on economic recovery, and the links to equitable growth and development.

  11. ILO launches Decent Work Profile for Maluku

    29 November 2012, Jakarta, Indonesia

    The International Labour Organization (ILO) was launching a Decent Work Profile for Maluku as part of the Decent Work Provincial Programme of Maluku, which assesses progress in the development of labour market conditions and protection for workers in the Maluku Province on Wednesday, 28 November, in Ambon, Maluku.

  12. ACCI, ACTU and the ILO launch Pacific employment project

    27 November 2012, Canberra

    The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) and the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) today announced the launch of a new project designed to improve vocational skills and employment opportunities for young people and their families in the Pacific Island Countries. The project will be piloted in Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu. Research clearly shows the decisive factor lifting families from poverty is a household member finding a job. Unfortunately, unemployment rates in the Pacific remain high, and access to skills development and vocational training is limited. Unemployment and underemployment of the region’s youth are particularly challenging.

  13. Greater access to HIV-sensitive social protection in Indonesia

    20 November 2012, Jakarta, Indonesia

    Key officials from Indonesia, India and Thailand will gather in Jakarta on 21st November to attend a UN-sponsored meeting which aims to promote HIV-sensitive social protection in Indonesia.

  14. Regional workshop on masyarakat adat

    19 November 2012, Jakarta, Indonesia

    The UNDP Asia-Pacific Regional Centre (UNDP APRC), International Labour Organization (ILO), and the United Nations Indigenous Peoples Partnership (UNIPP) are jointly hosting a two-day Regional Workshop on Indigenous and Tribal Peoples, on Monday – Tuesday, 19 – 20 November, at the Borobudur Hotel, Jakarta.

  15. Better Work Indonesia: Improving capacity of HR and compliance practitioners in the Indonesian garment industry

    14 November 2012, Jakarta, Indonesia

    To improve the performance of the Indonesian garment industry and to strengthen the capacity of companies to be more socially responsible, the ILO through its Better Work Indonesia programme is organising a one-day Networking Event for Human Resources and Compliance Practitioners in the Indonesian garment industry.

  16. ILO to share its lessons learnt in rebuilding and reconstructing Aceh and Nias

    12 November 2012, Jakarta, Indonesia

    After more than seven years, the struggling economy of Aceh province has recovered from being shaken by a devastating earthquake and tsunami in 2004. This province at the farthest west of Indonesia has kept growing since then, with a rise in job opportunities and an improvement in the welfare of the people. Significant changes are taking place in Aceh.

  17. ILO Thailand welcomes new regulation to improve conditions for domestic workers

    06 November 2012, Bangkok, Thailand

    The ILO Country Office for Thailand welcomes the passing of a new Ministerial Regulation that will better protect domestic workers in the Kingdom of Thailand, approved on 30 October and to be implemented this year.

  18. ILO to launch campaign to improve productivity and competitiveness of small and medium-sized companies in Makassar

    05 November 2012, Jakarta, Indonesia

    To assist SMEs to be more productive, competitive and sustainable, the International Labour Organization (ILO) will conduct a workshop entitled, “Effective Ways, Tips and Tricks to Achieve High-Productivity in SMEs”, on Tuesday, 6 November, at Grand Clarion Hotel, Makassar. The Makassar launch is a follow-up to the national launch which was held in Jakarta on 1 November.

  19. ILO to launch campaign to improve productivity and competitiveness of small and medium-sized Indonesian companies

    30 October 2012, Jakarta, Indonesia

    Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) make a major contribution to growth and job creation in Indonesia, providing 60 per cent of employment opportunities for both women and men. The key to sustainable economic development also lies in the development of SMEs that are competitive, resilient, and can continue to grow, even when market conditions are difficult.

  20. New ILO Regional Director for Asia Pacific takes up post

    16 October 2012, Bangkok, Thailand

    Mr Yoshiteru Uramoto (Japan) took up his post as Regional Director of the ILO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, based in Bangkok, on 16 October 2012. Until 2011, Mr Uramoto served as the Deputy to the Director-General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization in Vienna, Austria. He spent 27 years with UNICEF, and his last position was as Director of the UNICEF Office for Japan and the Republic of Korea. He has also worked in New York and in the former Republic of Yugoslavia (Croatia), India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Timor-Leste and Sudan.
