Bangkok (ILO News) -- The International Labour Organization (ILO) will mark its 90th anniversary with a world-wide series of activities, including a high-level event with the Thai Prime Minister in Bangkok, the ILO’s headquarters in Asia and the Pacific.
The ILO - which deals with work and workplace issues - is the oldest specialized agency of the United Nations (UN). The ILO was founded in 1919 and is the only surviving major creation of the Treaty of Versailles, which ended the First World War. When the UN was formed in 1946 the ILO became part of it.
The event in Bangkok will take place on Thursday, 23 of April at the Grand Millennium Sukhumvit Hotel, and will recognize the work of the Organization and its partners – Governments, workers and employers - in Thailand and throughout Asia and the Pacific The special relationship with Thailand will be marked with a Keynote Speech by His Excellency Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva. The ILO’s Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Ms. Sachiko Yamamoto, will also make remarks.
Following the speeches the Prime Minister and Ms. Yamamoto will cut a special 90th anniversary cake in the presence of the media and 300 invited guests, including Ambassadors, heads of United Nations’ agencies, representatives of the Royal Thai Government, Workers’ and Employers’ Organizations, and other dignitaries.
Thailand has been the host of the ILO’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific for more than 40 years. More than 30 countries in Asia and the Pacific are among the Organization’s 182 member states.
Following the ceremonial events there will be a seminar focusing on Thailand’s Decent Work Country Programme, involving experts and officials from the ILO, the Ministry of Labour, Workers’ and Employers’ Organizations, and other concerned groups. An exhibition on the development of the world of work in Thailand will also be on display.
