Press release | 03 January 2004

Cambodia (ILO News) - The Cambodian Government has awarded its National Construction Gold Medal to an ILO (International Labour Organisation) official, in recognition of her work in combating child labour and raising awareness of the problem.

Ms Ayaka Matsuno has been working on the issue of child labour, and in particular child domestic labour, for the last two years, while based at the ILO in Geneva and Bangkok. The decision to honour her with the National Construction Gold Medal was made by the Cambodian Prime Minister, Mr Hun Sen. The presentation was made by Mr It Samheng, Minister of Social Affairs, Labour, Vocational Training and Youth Rehabilitation (MOSALVY), at a ceremony in Phnom Penh on 23rd February 2004.

The two chairpersons of the Children's Committee (a Cambodian voluntary group run by young people under 18 that works to raise awareness about child domestic labour) also received National Construction Gold Medals at the same ceremony.

The National Construction Medal recognizes those who have made an important contribution to the development of Cambodian society.

The ILO has been working together with the Cambodian government on the problems of child labour and child domestic labour. On 16th March, Cambodia's National Institute of Statistics (part of the Ministry of Planning) and the ILO will be publishing the results of a survey of the situation of child domestic workers in Phnom Penh.
