BANGKOK (ILO News): A photo exhibition celebrating the lives of Thai working people will be opened by the Thai Minister of Labour H.E. Ms Uraiwan Thienthong at CentralWorld on Monday 28th April at 2 pm.
The exhibition, “Celebrating Working Lives; Decent Work, Better Tomorrow” consists of images of decent work in Thailand . The Minister will be joined by Mr Bill Salter, ILO Sub Regional Director for East Asia (which includes Thailand ).
The exhibition has been organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO) -the United Nations agency dealing with work and workplace issues – and is being hosted by CentralWorld. The show consists of about 40 newly-shot photos taken in 10 different work places in Thailand – ranging from orchid and rice farms to laboratories and designers studios.
The aim of the exhibition is to promote awareness of decent work in Thailand and the Asian Decent Work Decade (2006-2015) which Thailand , along with other Asia-Pacific countries, committed to, so reaffirming their commitment to achieving full, productive and decent employment for all their people by 2015
“Decent work sums up the aspirations we all have for our working lives,” said Mr. Salter. “It means work that is productive, delivers a fair income with security and social protection, safeguards basic rights, offers equality of opportunity and treatment, prospects for personal development and the chance to have your voice heard”.
“Decent Work not only plays an obvious and crucial role in the well-being of workers and their families but paves the way to the broader social and economic development of individuals, their communities and societies. Work that traps people in bondage or poverty or exposes them to hazards, discrimination or insecurity, does not allow individuals – or the economies they are part of - to advance and fulfil their potential,” he said.
The timing of the exhibition, from Monday 28 April to Sunday 11 May, is particularly appropriate because it will be open for viewing during World Day for Occupational Safety and Health (28 April), Labour Day (1 May), Thai National Safety Week (8-10 May) and the ASEAN Labour Ministers’ meeting which is being held in Bangkok from 8-9 May.
The show is at the Atrium Zone, 2nd floor, CentralWorld, Rajdamri and entry is free.
