Press release | 08 June 2007

(ILO, Bangkok )  June 12th is observed globally as World Day against Child Labour.  The theme for this year’s observance is child workers in agriculture.  The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that 70 per cent of child workers around the world are engaged in agricultural work.

In Thailand researches conducted during the past two years show that child workers in agriculture face hazardous working conditions; some are migrant children, working under the legal minimum age.

The ILO together with the Ministry of Labour, the National Council on Child and Youth Development, the Foundation for Child Development, the International Rescue Committee and Central Pattana Public Co., Ltd. will organize an activity on 12 June, during 13.30-18.00 hrs. at the CentralWorld Shopping Centre to mark the Day.  The aim is to raise awareness on the problems and solutions for child workers in agriculture in Thailand .

There will be presentations by children performing cultural shows and a drama.  Child workers from Udon Thani, Sakaew, Sri Saket and Phang Nga will present their views on the problems and solutions.  There will also be a panel discussion by experts.   The programme is attached.
