BANGKOK - A training programme to engage Thai, Cambodian, Lao and Burmese Trade Unions in improving respect for the rights of migrant workers is being organised by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Pattaya , Thailand .
The four-day workshop on “Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers in Thailand ” is being held at the Cholchan Pattaya Resort, Banglamung District, Pattaya. About 25 trade unionists from Thailand , Lao PDR and Cambodia are expected to attend. The workshop runs from Tuesday 27th t to Friday 30th March 2007.
The workshop’s objectives include raising awareness of the crucial role of unions in promoting the rights of migrant workers; improving understanding of the valuable contribution of migrants to the economic, social and cultural development of both sending and receiving countries; and encouraging unions to work together to promote and protect the rights of migrant workers.
At the end of the meeting the participants are expected to have drawn up a realistic plan of work that will include the strengthening of union-to-union co-operation between countries of origin and host nations.
The training workshop will include inputs from ILO experts in labour migration, international labour standards and rights labour. Participants will also make field trips to Sattahip and Chonburi to learn more about migrant labour issues.
