Press release | 18 November 2005

ILO NEWS – Bangkok– The ILO’s Mekong Sub-regional Project to Combat Trafficking in Children and Women today announced the launch of a new publication highlighting the value of direct child participation in fighting human trafficking.

The new series “First Hand Knowledge” was launched to coincide with this Sunday’s Universal Children's Day (20th November). The first publication in the series “Voices Across the Mekong: Community action against trafficking of children and women" documents the views of children and young women in five Mekong countries who have participated directly in the project's trafficking prevention initiatives.

The publication highlights the value of direct participation of all stakeholders, especially vulnerable groups in region-wide sustainable counter-trafficking responses at a grassroots community level.

Special correspondent Victoria Rialp takes the reader on a tour of towns and villages across the Greater Mekong Sub-region, from Phayao Province in Thailand to villages in China’s Yunnan Province. She meets with children and young women along the way and records their views about how they’ve benefited from direct participation in the implementation of the project-supported local-level action programmes to raise awareness about the dangers of trafficking and the inherent sexual and labour exploitation that follows.

Rialp travels to five countries in total – Cambodia, China (Yunnan), Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam – and brings back the voices and views of children and young women on other project initiatives too, such as training villagers new skills to help them earn more money thus reducing the pressure for the migration of their youth and documents the views of those who have received direct financial assistance in the form of micro-credit programmes.

“Voices Across the Mekong: Community action against trafficking of children and women” is available free in limited hardcopy edition or can be downloaded in PDF from the project Website at: www.childtrafficking.net  (English; ISBN 92-2-118064-6)
