Mongolia's small businesses to get safety and health training
Low-cost and easy-to-implement ways to improve safety and health in the workplace is the focus at an international workshop organized by the ILO and the Mongolian Employers’ Federation (MONEF).
Low-cost and easy-to-implement ways to improve safety and health in the workplace will be demonstrated at an international workshop to be held in Ulaan Baator this week. The training is being organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Mongolian Employers’ Federation (MONEF).
The programme is designed to train owners and managers of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) how to improve health and safety for themselves and their employees. SMEs make up the majority of businesses in Mongolia .
Representatives from around 30 SMEs from throughout Mongolia will attend the four-day training programme which is being held from 22-25 September 2004. Funding for the training is being provided by the ILO.
The objective of the workshop is not only to train the participants in good safety and health practices, but to teach them to become local trainers who can then train other SMEs in work safety.
The workshop will be conducted by Dr. Tsuyoshi Kawakami, Occupational Safety and Health Specialist at the ILO Subregional Office for East Asia in Bangkok , Mr. William Salter, Senior Advisor, Conditions of Work and Employment Programme, ILO Geneva, and Ms Anne Knowles, Senior Specialist for Employers’ Activities at the ILO in Bangkok .
The participants will be trained in good workstation design, handling materials and operating machines safely, creating a good physical working environment, welfare facilities and work organization. They will also learn how to conduct WISE (Work Improvement for Small Enterprises) training courses themselves. WISE uses an, action-oriented approach that encourages trainees to take part in group discussions and helps them develop concrete action plans.
After the workshop the ILO team will meet MONEF representatives to discuss ways to expand the WISE programme in Mongolia . “We are very encouraged that the initiative for this training came from the employers themselves,” said Anne Knowles. “With this commitment from them we hope to develop a strategy to expand the programme country-wide”.
