BANGKOK (ILO News) – The critically-acclaimed film, Ilo Ilo will be screened at the Bangkok International Film Festival on 27 November 2015, to draw attention to violence against women migrant workers.

Set in Singapore during the 1997 Asian financial crisis, Ilo Ilo (2013) chronicles the relationship between a family of three and their newly arrived Filipino domestic worker, Teresa. The film was written and directed by Anthony Chen. The screening, which is being hosted by the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations agency that deals with work and work-place issues, will be followed by a panel discussion on migrant workers and vulnerability to violence and exploitation.

Within the ASEAN region, women account for 47.8 per cent of migrants. One area employing many women in ASEAN is domestic work – that is cooking, cleaning, and care for children and the elderly in someone else’s home.

Domestic workers often receive very low wages, work excessively long hours, have no guaranteed day of rest, and are vulnerable to physical, mental and sexual abuse, or restrictions on freedom of movement. Employed by private households, they work out of the purview of labour inspectors and often without colleagues on whom they can rely for support.

Thailand is home to more than 250,000 domestic workers – many come from neighbouring countries including Lao PDR, Cambodia and Myanmar.

Members of the press are invited to attend the screening on Friday 27 November, at SF Cinema in Central World. The film will be in English, with Thai subtitles.

The ILO’s screening is part of the UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific’s first Bangkok International Film Festival on Ending Violence against Women and Girls (EVAWG Film Festival), which will take place from 26 - 29 November 2015, to celebrate “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence”.
