GENEVA (ILO News) - A delegation led by the Vice-Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, Baykham Khattiya, deposited the instrument of ratification with the ILO at a ceremony held at the organization’s Geneva headquarters on Tuesday 4 June 2014. The ceremony was attended by the ILO Director-General, Guy Ryder.

Lao People's Democratic Republic has now ratified ten ILO Conventions, including five of the eight fundamental Conventions. The country has been a member of the ILO since 1964.

The deposition ceremony took place during the International Labour Conference (ILC), the annual meeting of the ILO’s 185 member States that brings together some 4,000 government, worker and employer delegates.

Often called a world parliament of labour, the ILC sets the broad policies of the ILO, adopts international labour standards and serves as a forum for discussion of key social and labour issues. It also adopts the Organization's budget and elects its Governing Body.

During the two-week conference, delegates will discuss a broad range of issues, including labour migration and employment strategies, ways out of informality and strengthening the Forced Labour Convention, 1930 (No. 29). The conference will close on Thursday 12 June.
