Takaaki Sakurada from Japan elected Vice President of 2014 International Labour Conference

Mr Takaaki Sakurada has been elected as a Vice-President of the 103rd session of the International Labour Conference (ILC), which opened on Wednesday 28 May in Geneva, Switzerland.

GENEVA (ILO News)  – Mr Sakurada is an Advisor on International Affairs, at the Japanese Trade Union Confederation (JTUC-RENGO) and a Member of the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Governing Body.

Mr Sakurada will serve as the Vice-President representing the Workers’ group. Daniel Funes de Rioja the employer delegate from Argentina was elected as President of the Conference. The other two Vice-Presidents elected are Mr Alexandros Alexandris (Governments) from Greece, and Ms Jacqueline Mugo (Employers) from Kenya.

The ILC sets the broad policies of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and meets once a year in Geneva, Switzerland. The annual Conference brings together some 4,000 government, worker and employer delegates from the ILO’s 185 member States.

Often called a world parliament of labour, the Conference establishes and adopts international labour standards and is a forum for discussion of key social and labour questions. It also adopts the Organization's budget and elects its Governing Body.

During the two-week conference, delegates will discuss a broad range of issues, including labour migration and employment strategies, ways out of informality and strengthening ILO Forced Labour Convention, 1930 (No. 29). The Conference will close on Thursday 12 June.
