ILC: the Workers' Group pays tribute to Juan Somavia

Press release | 04 June 2012

Geneva, 4 June 2012 (ACTRAV INFO)-The Workers' Group paid a warm tribute to Juan Somavia, who was taking part in his last International Labour Conference as the ILO’s Director-General.

In his address, the Worker Vice-Chairperson of the Governing Body, Luc Cortebeeck, pointed to the gains made by the Organization under Juan Somavia's leadership, notably the Global Jobs Pact, gender equality and the adoption of several ILO Conventions. Luc Cortebeeck also emphasized the visibility gained by the ILO on the international stage thanks to Juan Somavia's efforts.

In reply, the Director-General recalled his cordial relations with the international trade union movement both before his election and during his term of office as the head of the ILO. He hailed the role played by trade union leaders in the installation of democracy in their countries. And he pledged that, after leaving the ILO, he will always continue to fight for social justice.

A number of trade union leaders also paid tribute to the Director-General, who is to leave office on 30 September 2012.
