ILO issues Conclusions on Asia Pacific member States’ applications of Conventions and Recommendations

The ILO’s Committee on the Application of Standards has released conclusions and observations concerning seven countries in the Asia and Pacific region.

Press release | 23 June 2009

BANGKOK: The ILO’s Committee on the Application of Standards has released conclusions and observations concerning seven countries in the Asia and Pacific region. The seven were among 25 countries worldwide whose application of the Conventions – or international labour standards – they had ratified was examined. The countries are:

  • China
  • Islamic Republic of Iran
  • Republic of Korea
  • Malaysia
  • Myanmar
  • Pakistan
  • Philippines

Conclusions (and background) relating to each country can also be found on the ILO’s conference website.

In addition, the record of the special sitting on the observance of the Forced Labour Convention, 1930 (No. 29) by the Government of Myanmar is also available.

While representatives from some 50 member states took part in the Committee’s 20 sittings, the Committee noted that 37 member States did not take part, including four from the Asia and Pacific region. The Committee noted with regret that, despite invitations, the Governments of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Thailand failed to fulfill their obligations under the ILO’s constitution to report to the Committee and take part in the discussions concerning their countries. Two other countries, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu did not attend the ILC.

The Report of the Committee (and its observations) was adopted at the 98th Session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva.
