(ILO, Bangkok) The International Labour Office is disappointed to learn that the Cambodian Appeals Court has upheld the lower court’s verdict against Thatch Saveth. In February 2005 Thatch Saveth was found guilty of the murder of Ros Sovannareth, a trade union leader, in May 2004.
Ros Savannareth's murder (as well as the murders of two other prominent union leaders, Chea Vichea and Hy Vuthy) has been deplored by the International Labour Conference and the ILO Governing Body's Committee on Freedom of Association. The ILO has repeatedly called for Thatch Saveth to be released from prison and for the murder of Ros Sovannareth to be investigated, in accordance with international standards of due process, so that the true perpetrators can be brought to justice.
The ILO expresses its strong hope that an appeal will be swiftly passed to the Supreme Court for the release of Thach Saveth.
