Foundation Workshop on Green Jobs Malaysia

The aim of the workshop is to strengthen constituents’ understanding on the key concepts of climate change and environmental issues, and linkages to national policy. The workshop also covers employment and green skills, measuring green jobs in the economy and modeling the impacts of environmental policies, as well as potential roles of workers and employers.

The Ministry of Human Resources (MOHR) in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTTHA) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) organized the foundation training workshop on Green Jobs from 16 to 17 July 2012, in Putrajaya, Malaysia. About 60 participants from the government, workers, employers and civil society attended the workshop.

The workshop is part of the technical cooperation activities under the Green Jobs Project Malaysia signed in May 2012 between the Human Resource Development Fund Malaysia (PSMB) and the ILO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific. The project aims to develop the analytical capacity of the ILO’s constituents in Malaysia to assess impacts of a green development strategy on the economy and employment. The project will prepare a green jobs mapping study and a new analytical modeling tool (Green DySAM) which will help decision makers to better understand the employment in green jobs, income distribution, CO2 emissions and economic implications of a green development strategy. The tool will be used to test and certify specialized vocational training for green skills. The results will aid the government (MOHR & KeTTHA) and social partners in identifying entry points for further development of policies for green jobs creation as well as social protection which will support a just transition towards a greener economy, a key agenda in Malaysia Vision 2020.
