A Regional Consultation is planned from 13-15th May 2012 in Amman Jordan, to review operational guidelines in Sri Lankan Diplomatic Missions to ensure the protection of migrant workers titled "Consultative Forum on Welfare & Protection of Migrant Workers" organized by Ministry of Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare and Ministry of External Affairs in collaboration with the ILO Office Colombo, as part of ILOs support to the Government to implement the National Labour Migration Policy. Sixty participants are expected including Senior decision makers from both Ministries and the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau, Ambassadors and labour officers from SL missions in 13 Gulf Corporation Council(GCC) countries as well as the far east together with ILO experts from the region and Geneva. The event will support the finalization of an Operational Manual for Sri Lankan Missions in labour receiving countries.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs of Viet Nam, with the support of the ASEAN Secretariat, have organized a tripartite ASEAN Seminar on Unemployment Insurance, Income Security Measures and Active Labour Market Policies which took place during 20-22 March 2012 in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam.

This tripartite regional seminar, organized by the ILO with the support of the Ministry of Labour of Thailand and the ASEAN Secretariat, under the theme "Setting Minimum Wage and Wage Guidelines: Role of Tripartite Partners and Impact on Industrial Relations", aims to provide opportunities for ASEAN member states (tripartite) to discuss and share experiences on different mechanisms/processes in setting national minimum wage as well as wage guidelines; and role of tripartite partners in the context of good industrial relations practices. The seminar is funded by the ILO/Japan Multi-bilateral Programme through its ASEAN-ILO/Japan Industrial Relations for ASEAN Integration project.

BANGKOK (ILO News) There is limited support for the rights of migrant workers among the public according to a new multi-country study released by the ILO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific. In general the report reveals higher levels of public support for migrant workers, in terms of their rights and their contribution, in Singapore and South Korea than in Malaysia and Thailand.

Singapore has ratified the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006) with the full support of tripartite partners – the seafarer unions and the National Trades Union Congress, as well as the maritime industry and the Singapore National Employers Federation.

ILO NEWS (Geneva) – The ILO and the Singapore Ministry of Manpower (MOM) have signed a two-year Partnership Agreement to improve human resource development and workplace practices in the ASEAN region.
