A new report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) has found that the global number of child labourers has declined by one third since 2000, with the largest absolute decline in the Asia Pacific region.

The District Secretary and the Administration of Ratnapura, assisted by the Ministry of Labour and Labour Relations, with technical and financial support from the ILO are embarking on a journey that will make the district officially free of Child Labour by June 2016.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has called for an “urgent and vigorous” global campaign to tackle the growing number of work-related diseases, which claim an estimated 2 million lives per year. The World Day for Safety and Health at Work in 2013 focuses on the prevention of occupational diseases.

The Maldives has ratified the eight ILO fundamental Conventions on 4 January 2013, dealing with four categories of fundamental principles and rights at work: freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining; the elimination of all forms of forced or compulsory labour; the effective abolition of child labour; and the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.

The Regional Secretariat of the South Asia Initiative to End Violence against Children (SAIEVAC), a South Asia Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Apex Body and the International Labour Organization (ILO) have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The workshop is organized by International Training Centre of the ILO in Turin and the Dutch Employers Cooperation Programme (DECP) in collaboration with Bureau for Employers’ Activities (ACT-EMP) in Geneva and the support of the ILO Offices in New delhi and Sri Lanka to strengthen the employers’ organizations to perform more effectively by increasing the skills of key personnel and their capacity to boost the effectiveness of EOs in South Asia by sharing of practices on membership promotion /retention, services, lobbying in general, and with specific reference to lobbying/services on labour related issues in trade.
