  1. QBN Malaysia April-June 2014

    There are reportedly 1.8 million documented and 2 million undocumented migrant workers in Malaysia – which represents a third of the country’s total labour force. An estimated 40% of these workers are women. Most migrants are employed in low-skilled and labour intensive jobs as contract workers. Official channels for recruitment exist for 14 Nationalities, including Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar. In August 2011, the Government launched the 6P program, which provided a window for irregular migrants to register and obtain amnesty. A campaign to stem irregular migrants and their employers will follow.

A recent Verite report highlighted conditions in the electronics sector for migrant workers.

    The Global Action Programme on Migrant Domestic Workers and their Families (Migrant Domestic Workers in Action) seeks to address the specific challenges migrant domestic workers face by implementing global advocacy and knowledge development initiatives in five “migration corridors”: Indonesia-Malaysia; Paraguay-Argentina, Nepal-Lebanon; Ukraine-Poland; Zimbabwe-South Africa.

  1. Employment practices and working conditions in Thailand’s fishing sector

    The report, based on the largest survey of working conditions in the Thai fishing sector to date, has been compiled by the ILO’s tripartite project to protect migrant workers within and from the Greater Mekong Subregion and the Asian Research Center for Migration at Chulalongkorn University’s Institute of Asian Studies.

  2. GMS TRIANGLE Project Update: January 2014

    Tripartite Action to Protect Migrant Workers from Labour Exploitation (the GMS TRIANGLE project) aims to strengthen the formulation and implementation of recruitment and labour protection policies and practices. The project is operational in five countries: Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Thailand and Viet Nam, with activities in China to follow. In each country, governments and social partners are engaged in each of the GMS TRIANGLE project objectives.
