  2. Disability rights and domestic work in ASEAN

    In 2023 the ILO TRIANGLE in ASEAN programme conducted a study about the skills and working conditions of migrant domestic workers in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, the findings from which were published in the report Skilled to care, forced to work? Recognizing the skills profiles of migrant domestic workers in ASEAN amid forced labour and exploitation. This study asked 1,200 migrant domestic workers about care to persons with disabilities and about protection if they themselves acquire a disability. The study also surveyed 600 employers. This brief is based on the study’s findings.

    “With a minimum contribution to Social Security, I can secure my family members”. Airnaud, a coffee farmer from Dong Village, Laongam District in Lao PDR explains why he decided to register in the National Social Security Fund. He finds the minimum monthly contribution of 108,000 kip as being comparable to his daily expenses.

    Regional actuarial valuation training builds skills and management capacity for social security institutions in the region to support evidence-based policy making.

  5. Social security from a Lao farmers’ perspective – Part 1

    Kongpeang Phengvilay, a coffee farmer from Dong Village, Laongam district in Lao PDR registered in the National Social Security Fund after district authorities came to her village to explain the benefits of membership. She does not want to become a burden on her children when she grows old.

  6. International Coffee Day in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic

    International Coffee Day was celebrated in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic under the theme “Promoting the right to a safe and healthy working environment in the coffee supply chains”. Held in Vientiane on 29 September – 1 October 2023 and Luang Prabang on 27 – 29 October 2023, the festival brought together Lao coffee enthusiasts, sellers, suppliers and producers. It raised awareness of safe work in the supply chain through many activities, games and panel discussions.

    Tripartite partners reviewed and discussed the ILO comparative analysis of the Lao OSH legislation.

  8. Fostering decent employment opportunities through youth entrepreneurship

    The Promoting the Global Development Initiative with a Focus on South-South Cooperation in Employment in ASEAN organized a panel discussion titled "Youth Entrepreneurship: Fostering Decent Employment Opportunities" at the National Career and Productivity Fair 2023 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to promote entrepreneurship development as a viable pathway for decent employment generation and a productive alternative for job seekers.
