With the support of Ferrero, this summer children went to school instead of the fields

The continuity of children's education is monitored throughout the year, not just during the harvest season.

ANKARA (ILO News) – The “Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour in Seasonal Agriculture in Hazelnut Harvesting in Türkiye” Project, carried out in collaboration between the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security of Türkiye, and supported by Ferrero Hazelnut, enabled the children of seasonal agricultural labourer families to continue their education this summer. Approximately 1300 children were directed towards education in the summer of 2023. They received educational materials, transportation, and nutritional support. Additionally, the children were provided with clothing and hygiene materials, and participated in social and cultural activities supported their development and expanded their horizons.

Over the past three years, the number of children benefiting from these services within the scope of the project exceeded 3000. Families were also informed, and around 1200 family members benefited from social support services. Furthermore, these families received food and hygiene kit support.

In addition to the services provided, children were encouraged to continue their education not only during the harvest season but also when they returned their hometowns, through regular family visits.

ILO Senior Project Coordinator Koray Abacı stated, "With the public-private sector collaboration, we are continuing our work by expanding the project's activity areas. In the project's third year, we reached over 3000 children of seasonal agricultural labourer families. We are conducting activities to help children realize their abilities and guide them in setting future goals. Thanks to the valuable support of Ferrero Hazelnut, we are expanding the scope of the project and continuing our efforts for its implementation."

About the Project

The project, carried out with the support of Ferrero to contribute to ending child labour in seasonal hazelnut harvesting in Türkiye, aims to prevent children from working in hazelnut harvesting and ensure that they continue their education. Additionally, activities are carried out within the scope of the project to improve the working and living conditions of seasonal agricultural workers. The project, financed by Ferrero Hazelnut and carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Social Security of Türkiye, covers the provinces of Trabzon, Samsun, Zonguldak, Düzce, Sakarya, and Şanlıurfa.

As part of the public-private sector partnership between the ILO and Ferrero Hazelnut, the project also targets to enhance the capacities of national and local stakeholders to implement actions necessary for eliminating child labour. The project aims to establish and disseminate mechanisms for direct intervention in ending child labour in hazelnut harvesting areas, while also increasing awareness among the public, national and local stakeholders, and supply chain actors about the importance of eradicating child labour.
