Economic empowerment and HIV Vulnerability Reduction along Transport Corridors in Southern Africa

The documentary captures the initiatives targeting vulnerable populations along the Beitbridge corridor in Zimbabwe to reduce HIV vulnerability through economic empowerment. The programme - implemented by ILO/AIDS and funded by Sida - includes access to economic services, such as business management, access to income generation activities through micro-finance institutions, as well as HIV services, such as voluntary counselling and testing, sexual reproductive health and rights, and peer education.

Sisana is HIV Positive and Back at Work

Over a year ago ILO TV interviewed Sisana Buba, a supermarket cashier who was sick at home with an HIV-related illness. ILO TV returned to Swaziland recently to find Sisana feeling well and back at work. The supermarket where she works has a HIV/AIDS workplace policy. As a result Sisana hasn't suffered from discrimination from her colleagues, and has had access to anti-retroviral treatment. Developed with the help of the ILO, this kind of HIV/AIDS workplace policy is now going global, with the adoption of an international labour standard on HIV/AIDS in the world of work at the ILO's 99th International Labour Conference.

India: Ending the Stigma of HIV/AIDS for Construction Workers

In India, construction is one of the fastest growing sectors engaging a large number of migrant workers from across the country. With little knowledge about HIV, and culturally and socially isolated in India’s big cities, migrant workers are especially vulnerable to HIV infection. Informal workers, including migrant workers, make up 93 per cent of India’s 400 million-plus workforce. How to tackle discrimination towards workers with HIV and help prevent the spread of HIV have become a national priority, with the adoption of a national policy on HIV/AIDS and the world of work.

Guyana: Loggers Learn about HIV/AIDS Prevention

Guyana, a country with a population of around 750,000 has an HIV prevalence of 2.5 per cent in the age group of 15-49 which accounts for 52 per cent of the country's population. The epidemic in Guyana is considered generalized, and it is mainly a heterosexual epidemic. Despite the encouraging signs with regard to reducing HIV prevalence among most-at-risk populations, there is still much to do to tackle the problem of scant awareness of HIV/AIDS. That's why the Government of Guyana, through strong partnerships with employers and workers organizations are trying to increase the number of people being counselled and tested. Thanks to the support of the ILO and the USDOL, HIV/AIDS workplace education and prevention programmes are now reaching even the most remote areas of the country.

Workplaces in Africa respond to HIV/AIDS

A film on the ILO's work in five countries in Africa. The ILO is the United Nations specialised agency for the world of work and cosponsor of UNAIDS. Within the UNAIDS family, the ILO is lead agency for workplace policies and programmes on HIV/AIDS. A training video for people living with HIV/AIDS

9 October 2009 - This video from the International Labour Organization (ILO) offers practical step-by-step guidelines to help people living with HIV/AIDS to raise awareness and understanding in their workplaces. With contributions from more than a 100 people living with HIV, it is part of a unique training package developed with the Indian Network of People living with HIV/AIDS (INP+). It has been produced in both English and Hindi with the support of the United States Department of Labor (USDOL) and the President Emergency Funds for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
