Prevent HIV, and protect human rights at work will be the key theme of the ILO event on World AIDS Day, 2010. This year’s event is significant in view of the recently adopted ILO Recommendation 200 - the first International Labour Standard on HIV and AIDS and the World of Work. ILO Recommendation 200 aims to protect human rights at work and opens a new chapter in the response to HIV and AIDS in and through the workplaces.
In Geneva, as part of the Light for Rights global campaign, the ILO traditional human red ribbon will be illuminated. The ILO & UN choir will sing on the occasion at the ILO headquarters, which will also have an exhibition of ILO’s work on HIV and AIDS. Mr. Guy Ryder, ILO Executive Director, Standards and Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work Sector will address the gathering of ILO staff as well as colleagues from other UN agencies, UNAIDS and civil society organizations. Dr Sophia K. Kisting, Director of the ILO Programme on HIV/AIDS and the World of Work, will share her views and read a poem written by a Bolivian human rights worker entitled “Shining with HIV”. Representatives from UN Plus, the UN system HIV positive staff group, will also speak and share their perspective.
Two video news releases, “Loggers Learn about HIV/AIDS Prevention in Guyana” and “Business Women on Board with HIV/AIDS Message in Malawi” convey strong messages on the need to eliminate stigma and discrimination at work, empowering women and showcase good examples of ILO’s work on HIV and AIDS in the World of Work. World AIDS Day events will also be organized at the field level to promote Recommendation 200.
The ILO has built on the theme of World AIDS Day 2009-2010 and the "I am" campaign on human rights and universal access to prevention, care, support and treatment with the slogan "I am living my rights. I am working."
