Omar Faruk Osman: “The ratification of ILO core Conventions means a lot for the Workers of Somalia”

According to Omar Faruk Osman, the General Secretary of the Federation of Somali Trade Unions (FESTU), by ratifying ILO Core Conventions on Freedom of Association (No.87)and Collective Bargaining (No.98), Somali workers were given the legal right to organize and bargain collectively in accordance with the ILO core labour standards. In this interview, Mr Osman explained the role of trade unions in the implementation of these Conventions and the importance of social dialogue to improve Workers’ situation in Somalia.

ILO joins UN Women, UNDP and UNFPA in the country’s first Joint Programme for Gender Equality

On 27 February 2014, the United Nations in Zimbabwe launched the country’s first Joint Programme on Gender Equality. Funded through the generous support of the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida), the programme brings together government, UN agencies, development partners and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Sida contributed US $5.3 million to the programme which aims to accelerate the country’s advancement towards gender equality and women’s empowerment.
