Labour round table held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

A labour round table organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in partnership with its tripartite partners was held from Feb 26-27, 2019 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to discuss issues of social dialogue, freedom of association and collective bargaining.

By bringing together key stakeholders in the garment and textile industry under one roof, the labour round table facilitated a dialogue among Ministry of labour and social affairs, labour and social affairs bureau from the 5 regions, Ethiopian Investment Commission, employers and workers organizations, global unions, brands and relevant stakeholder operating in the sector.

The labour round table allowed stakeholders to discuss issues pertinent to the industry including freedom of association, collective bargaining, productivity and sustainable sourcing.

During the meeting, all stakeholders gave emphasis on the right for freedom of association and agreed that social dialogue, as a process is very important to build trust.
we all agree that freedom of association is a fundamental right that is not up for negotiation”  workers and managers representatives emphasised.
Furthermore, establishing relationships and raising awareness on the necessity and benefits of constructive dialogue among relevant stakeholders in the industry was recognized as an important factor in creating harmonious industrial relation in the sector. The need for a regular labour round table was also emphasised in order to create a collaborative approach within the industry.

Following the two-day round table, it was agreed to establish a task force that encompasses representative from worker, employer and government to develop action points and shape the way forward.
