In Africa, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) drive innovation and development in all sectors of the economy. All this in a context where 70% of workers work in the informal economy, mainly in MSMEs. Lack of respect for fundamental principles and rights at work, absence of social benefits, unsafe working conditions and precarious conditions are characteristic features of the informal economy. Workplace accidents and occupational diseases are common. Moreover, as these enterprises lack visibility, labour inspection visits and appropriate follow up is very limited.

Thus, the project aims at supporting Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), including in the informal economy, to prevent occupational risks, improve working conditions, and promote respect for Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work (FPRW). 

In order to achieve its goal, the project implements a twofold strategy:

1. it supports national labour inspectorates to better ensure compliance 
2. it increases the capacityies of Governments, of employers, workers and their representatives, as well as those of Governments and other public Institutions (such as National school of Administration and Judicial Institutes) to promoteimplement FPRW and Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) issues regulations on the ground.

Five countries are part of the project: Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Madagascar, Togo and Tunisia.

Expertise France  and the Institut National du Travail, de l'Emploi et de la Formation Professionnelle work closely in the implementation of the project within the framework of the partnership between France and the ILO.
