The Regional Action Plan (RAP) for the elimination of child labour in ECOWAS Countries – designed by the ILO and the ECOWAS Commission - is being discussed at the experts’ level (ILO, ECOWAS, key stakeholders) for formulation of effective policy recommendations to be implemented in the sub-region.

These recommendations provided by the joint technical committee will serve as strategic entry points for the RAP which will be discussed on World Day Against Child Labour (WDACL) in a special meeting of the International Labour Conference (12 June 2012, Geneva) in the presence of Labour Ministers, representatives of Trade Unions and the private sector as well as various associations of ECOWAS Countries.

Nigeria will commemorate the World Day againstChild Labour with a one day sensitization rally to be conducted in market places of three states which includes public discussions on child labour and its legislation and one on one talks with market traders and working children.

The objectives of these events are to increase awareness on the legislations against child labour in Nigeria, to gain the support of Informal sectors especially in the market place to protect children against child labour and to identify some additional beneficiaries for the project in Ogun and Oyo states.

Nigeria held a series of consultations – in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO) - in six geo-political zones of the country to discuss ways and means to adopt and implement the draft National Policy and the Action Plan to eliminate Child Labour in the country.

The ILO Abuja office - in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Labour - conductedin December 2011 - a one day consultancy workshop in the capital city with representatives of all line Ministries and departments of the states involved as well as delegates from workers’ and employers’organisations and key NGOS working on the elimination of child labour, poverty alleviation and trafficking
