SCORE Alumni Network is launched in Ghana

The SCORE Alumni Network, Ghana (SAN GH) which was formed on 24th June 2021 has been launched. In attendance were 30 participants drawn from 20 SMEs, Implementing Partners, Social Partners, ILO and other stakeholders.

Mr John Wilson, the Chief Executive Officer of the SCORE Training Solutions, Ghana and a SCORE Trainer, launched the SAN GH on 30th September 2021 amidst excitement and applause from participants at the Fiesta Royale Hotel in Accra. Giving a brief background, Mr Wilson narrated how far SCORE had come and the unsuccessful effort to sustain the initial attempt in the Alumni formation. “After ten (10) years of SCORE Implementation in Ghana, we have a solid Alumni Network formed. On behalf of the Director of the ILO, the Director-General of the MDPI, the Implementing Partners, social partners and all stakeholders, I declare the SAN GH Alumni duly launched” he declared.

The programme was started with a welcome address by the Deputy Director-General of the Management Development and Productivity Institute (MDPI), Mrs. Bernice Adjei. She stated that, the Alumni offers a platform for learning and exchange of innovative ideas and best practices which could service as growth tools for enterprises. She emphasised the position of the President of the Republic of Ghana on the need for collaborations for the country’s industrialisation agenda and development; and, entreated the companies and networks to enjoy synergies. On behalf of the MDPI, she enjoined the enterprises present to take the opportunity to be part of this progressive global network of SMEs in order to be abreast with new skills.

Speaking on behalf of the Country Director of the ILO, Abuja, the National Project Manage, Mr. Samuel Onoma Asiedu explained that networks are ‘’social capital’’ and relevant factor of production in the contemporary era of production. He encouraged the enterprises to use the Alumni network as the basis of continuous improvements and sustenance of their businesses.

Mrs Akorfa Ahiafor, the interim General Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of JIREH Microfinance, took her turn to present a 19-Article Draft Constitution. After extensive discussions, passionate deliberations and inputs to improve the draft, one of the participants, Dr Nana Yaa Owusu Prempeh moved for the adoption of the Draft constitution.

The Interim President of the Alumni and Chief Executive Officer of DANADAMS, Mr Prince Yamoah outlined the next steps of the Alumni and call on the ILO and MDPI to support them to succeed.

The Director-General of the MDPI, Mr Kwaku Odame-Takyi pledged his commitment to with the leadership of SAN GH, and providing an Office set-up for the operationalization of the alumni. He added that MDPI, through the support of the ILO, is training 90 SMEs who are likely to join the Alumni.

The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) are the agencies funding the implementation of SCORE in Ghana. The Sustaining Competitive and Responsible Enterprise (SCORE) is an ILO global programme that seeks to improve productivity and working conditions in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
