  1. Malawi’s Minister of Labour Launches the Advocacy and Communication Strategy on Child Labour Elimination

    On 29th June 2023, Minister of Labour Honourable Ms. Agnes Nyalonje launched the first ever Advocacy and Communication Strategy on child labour elimination in Malawi. The Advocacy and Communication Strategy has been developed to raise awareness, knowledge and understanding of child labour issues in various sectors in Malawi. It supports government, social partners, civil society and other key stakeholders in advocating for the elimination of child labour and guide the implementation of advocacy activities both nationally and locally

  2. Republic of Malawi Guidelines For Public Service Workplace Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy 2023

    The Gender Equality Act (GEA) under section 7(1) requires Government to take active measures to ensure that employers develop and implement appropriate policies aimed at eliminating sexual harassment in the workplace. The Guidelines for the Public Service Workplace Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy are a comprehensive guide to the implementation of the Public Service Workplace Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy(PSWASHP). They provide the procedure for managing sexual harassment in the workplace from the time they are reported through to hearing processes and the resolution of the case and further rehabilitation of sexual harassment survivors. Users of these Guidelines include but not limited to Anti-Sexual Harassment Desk Officers (ASHDO), Disciplinary Committee, Human Resources Officers, Gender officers, Heads of Departments, Controlling/Responsible Officers and others.

  4. The 2023 Zambia Social Protection Week #ZSPW23

    The Government of the Republic of Zambia through the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services with support from the United Nations and cooperating partners is, for the fifth time, hosting the Zambia Social Protection Week (ZSPW). The event will take place from Monday 19th – 23rd June, 2023 and graced by Her Honour the Vice President of the Republic of Zambia, Ms. Mutale Nalumango. The hybrid event carries the theme “Adaptive, Shock Responsive and Inclusive Social Protection”. The Zambia Social Protection Week is a public event, that brings together Government, Social Partners, Cooperating Partners, Civil Society Organizations, Social Security institutions, Academia, Faith Based Organizations, Parliamentarians, Media and most importantly the general public to be informed, discuss and contribute to the development of Social Protection in Zambia.

  5. National Action Plan on Child Labour, 2020-2025

    The development of the second Malawi National Action Plan on Child Labour (NAP II) covering the period 2020-2025 reaffirms Malawi government commitment to the elimination of child labour and thus calls stakeholders and the general public to join hands in the elimination of child labour. The successful implementation of the NAP II hinges on the commitment of all the stakeholders. The NAP II is aligned to the draft National Child Labour Policy, the Malawi Growth Development Strategy (MGDS) III and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - SDG 8 in order to achieve coherence with these key development strategies

  7. Civil society platform organizes training on social protection for members of political parties and journalists with ILO’ support

    From 3 to 4 May 2023, the Mozambican Civil Society Platform for Social Protection (PSCM-PS) organized a training on social protection geared towards members of political parties and journalists. This capacity building activity aimed at raising awareness on social protection among politicians and the media ahead of October’s municipal elections. The goal being to provide this target audience with more knowledge and evidence on social protection that could be used to feed into party manifestos and high-quality media coverage.

  8. Workers’ organizations join forces and launch national campaign for ratification of Convention No. 102 in Mozambique

    During the week of the International Workers’ Day, the two largest national trade union confederations of Mozambique, namely the National Confederation of Independent and Free Trade Unions of Mozambique (CONSILMO) and the Mozambican Workers Organization (OTM-CS), launched through a press conference held on 5 May 2023 a national campaign calling for the ratification of Social Security (Minimum Standards) Convention, 1952 (No.102). This campaign is being supported by the ILO through the Portuguese-funded project “Strengthening of Social Protection Systems in the PALOP and Timor-Leste (Phase 3), also known as ACTION/Portugal, and the IrishAid-funded regional project "Accelerating the Achievement of Universal Social Protection to Leave No One Behind."

  9. Occupational Health and Safety Policy 2023

    The Policy provides guidelines on instilling a preventive occupational safety and health culture and rehabilitative health services while at the same time offering compensation to those who suffer physical injuries and occupational diseases. In addition, the Policy seeks to strengthen the capacity of oversight institutions and provide information on OSH. Further, the Policy is based on international occupational safety and health standards and global best practices to reduce the incidences of work­related accidents and diseases.

  10. Skills Development for Increased Employability Programme

    The four-year Skills Development for Increased Employability Programme (SDEP), launched in 2023, strengthens the relevance, quality and governance of the TEVET system, and encourages greater participation of the private sector in skills development initiatives that respond to the needs of industry, in a greener economy. Funded through a partnership agreement with the European Union (EU), the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Zambia is working to support the Government and private actors to focus on the governance and management structures of Zambia’s Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training (TEVET) system and to support the upgrading and maintenance of training facilities and curriculum development. Private sector involvement plays an important role in updating curricula and for the promotion of Work Based Learning (WBL) interventions. The overall objective is to contribute towards improving employability of the labour force for both women and men in Zambia and supporting the TEVET system towards producing relevant skills that match the needs of the industry by the year 2026.
