Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is currently implementing a project in the Northern region of Sierra Leone aimed at developing the capacities of various entities for comprehensive district development. According to JICA, the overall goal of the project is to strengthen the structure and function of districts in Sierra Leone to manage district/rural development more effectively and efficiently.

Two components of the project are:
  • Model ward component involves assisting the rural people to identify their needs and developing the capacities of the various entities to meet those needs.
  • Infrastructure component including feeder roads, water well rehabilitation, markets, etc
The Project is a continuation of an on-going programme designed to provide rapid employment opportunities and income generating activities for youth while strengthening the capacities of small contractors, local governments and MDAs to facilitate job creation at local levels. It will also stimulate local economic development.
