GENEVA (ACTRAV INFO ) – The Director of the ILO’s Bureau for Workers ‘Activities (ACTRAV), Maria Helena ANDRE, has underlined the importance of trade unions taking a lead in the promotion of decent work for people with disabilities.

In opening remarks to the Expert Conference on Disabilities, Maria Helena Andre noted that “the representation of people with disabilities in trade unions remains dramatically low. We believe that promoting decent work for persons with disabilities will strengthen trade unions organizations”.

The Director of ACTRAV said that the “inclusion of persons with disabilities is an important step towards decent work and social justice for all, two critical pillars for the achievement of our Sustainable Development Goals”.

She called on workers’ organizations to organize and protect the rights of persons with disabilities. “Mobilizing and organizing workers with disabilities could be a great opportunity to achieve full employment for all,” concluded Ms. Andre.

Union representatives, experts and ILO officials will attend this Conference to share research, practical strategies and actions that trade unions can take on enhancing decent work for people with disabilities.

The event is organized by ACTRAV in cooperation with the Gender, Equality and Diversity (GED) branch.
