Press release | Johannesburg | 22 September 2011

Johannesburg, 22 September 2011 (ACTRAV INFO)-From 20 to 22 September 2011 the ILO’s Bureau for Workers’ Activities (ACTRAV) organized a seminar in Johannesburg on “Tripartite Declaration of Principles concerning Multinational Enterprises and Social Policy”.

The seminar focused on the telecommunications sector, which is rapidly expanding in Africa but is creating problems for trade unions through the MTN Group, which is the only multinational telecommunications group on the continent and operates in 21 countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

The participants presented reports on the national trade union situations in the telecommunications sector, while urging the MTN Group to improve its policy on the realization of trade union rights. Participants emphasized the need for trade union organizations and MTN Group to have a common strategy for strengthening social dialogue and respect for workers’ rights.

At the end of the seminar the participants, who included representatives nominated by the secretariat of the Workers’ group from trade unions affiliated to UNI-Africa and ITUC-Africa, adopted a resolution.
