Union Roadshow: EPZ Organising in Indonesia

Millions of workers worldwide are employed in Export Processing Zones (EPZs). Most of these are young women, often migrants and mostly from poor backgrounds. They work long hours with precarious contracts. In most cases, they cannot organise themselves into trade unions to protect their rights. The Indonesian affiliates of the International Metalworkers’ Federation have demonstrated that despite the difficulties, it is possible to organise EPZ workers. The video below shows the strategies Indonesian unions are using to organise these workers. (Courtesy IMF)
