Support of ACTRAV for trade unions in Europe reflects the great diversity of development of labor movement across the continent. Since early 90ies, major focus of ILO assistance has been placed on countries from Central and Eastern Europe and CIS where trade unions have undergone deep internal reforms.
ACTRAV assistance comprises a wide range of issues including support for internal union reforms and democratization, building of new trade union education systems, developing union research and training materials. Support is aimed at building trade unions’ capacity on trade union rights, especially freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining. During the past years, priority areas for ILO assistance for unions in this part of Europe have been labor law reforms, employment policies, and reforms of wage setting system, social security and pension reforms, occupational safety and health and gender equality, among others. The overall objective of the ILO assistance has been strengthening the capacity of unions to better represent the interests of their members through social dialogue and collective bargaining.
