ACTRAV works closely with the Regional Office for Africa which is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and which covers 53 countries.
The implementation of the 2007-2015 action plan of the Decent Work Agenda in Africa, adopted by the tripartite ILO constituents (Government, Employers and Workers) during the Eleventh African Regional Meeting in April 2007 in Addis Ababa, is the framework for the collaboration between ACTRAV and the Regional Office.
Within this framework, ACTRAV focuses on capacity building for trade union organizations in order to improve and strengthen their participation in the implementation of Decent Work Country Programs. This is important in order to put more emphasis on fundamental workers’ rights in Decent Work Country Programs and better enable trade unions to play a role in the development of African countries.
Other priority areas in which ACTRAV assists workers’ organizations in Africa are:
- Promotion of and respect for fundamental principles and rights at work
- Strengthening of collective bargaining and social dialogue
- Reduction of child labour
- Promotion of gender issues
- Extension of social security to all workers
- Fight against HIV and AIDS at the workplace
