HIV/AIDS

Document | 03 January 2012

The vast majority of the 33 million people living with HIV worldwide are workers, and most of them who die from AIDS are in the prime of their working lives. Workers are losing their health, their income, their rights and their lives to the disease. Discrimination threatens people’s rights and jobs. The loss of skilled and experienced workers reduces productivity and deprives households of income.

As those most directly affected, workers and their organizations are among the best to be able to respond effectively.

ACTRAV, in cooperation with other departments in the ILO supports trade union organizations to do so. We assist trade union organizations to strengthen their capacity to deal with HIV/AIDS, to develop and implement programmes that protect workers’ rights, support prevention, and provide care and treatment.
